Tools
At Zack's Dance Lab, we build computational tools to help us understand social dancing better and to apply the laws we discover in practical ways.
Why We Build Tools
Our research reveals fundamental laws and structures that underlie social dancing. But understanding these laws in the abstract is only the first step. We build tools to:
- Explore the implications of the laws we discover—what do they mean in practice?
- Visualize and interact with abstract concepts, making them tangible and explorable
- Apply mathematical and computational methods to dance problems
- Help dancers and researchers understand social dancing at a deeper level
These tools are experiments in applying our research. They help us test our understanding, discover new questions, and make the abstract concepts we study more accessible.
Available Tools
Dance Calculator
Estimate the number of possible positions given constraints. This tool applies our research on the mathematical foundations of dance positions to help understand the combinatorial possibilities in social dancing.
Position Explorer
Generate concrete combinations of positions to explore. This tool helps visualize and interact with the different ways dancers can connect and position themselves relative to each other.
